5. I don't know how many i need, what is the coverage and how does it operate?

The repeller emits a pulse at 40-50 second intervals and covers an area of approx 700sqm.(6000sq.ft). The repeller transmits its signal in all directions approx 15m(50ft), they can be placed 30m(100ft) apart for optimum coverage. It is recommended to use two or more units to get the best results.

This unique repeller has been developed to scare away all kinds of snakes; it emits a pulsing vibration, which the snake picks up through sensors throughout its body. The snake perceives a danger zone causing them to evacuate the area; most snakes will retreat almost immediately.

The sense organs of snakes are uniquely different than those of mammals and other animals. Unlike mammals, which mainly rely on their sight and hearing, snakes rely primarily on their senses of smell and touch. They do not have moveable eyelids, but transparent caps called "brille" as protective eye coverings. Because of this, their eye movement is fairly limited. They also do not have an external ear, middle ear, or tympanic membrane (eardrum). Instead, they use a small ossicle (ear bone), called the "columella," to detect vibrations of sound waves conducted through the ground. They are able to pick up some sound waves conducted through the air, but only at very low frequencies. Snakes actually sense the vibration right throughout their bodies via their spine, this is termed somatic hearing, where the vibration is picked up and transferred along the spinal cords to the ear bone.

Much research has gone into developing the correct type of pulse to trigger the retreat instinct in snakes. It has been designed and produced to give years of trouble free service with no running costs. Solar powered for economy and low maintenance, built of sturdy materials to resist the elements. It is environmentally safe and will not affect any other animals, birds or livestock.

The effectiveness of the repeller is greatly increased when two or more units are used as the snake cannot identify where the threat may be so it retreats much more quickly and generally will go much further away. One unit can and will protect its area well, a circle with a radius of 15 metres, but we recommend that at least two units be used. To protect larger areas it is recommended that multiple units be placed approx 30 metres apart, to get complete coverage between units for maximum protection, the more units deployed the more effective the result. Throughout Spring, Summer and as Autumn approaches in many parts, numerous young snakes are emerging and looking for new territories and older larger snakes will be out trying to establish territories in which to breed, and spend the cooler months.

The repellers are very good at removing snakes from behind or under obstacles such as rock walls, from under sheds and garages. Small shed foundations, footpaths and driveways will not stop the effectiveness of the unit, and they will also operate very well in rocky ground.

This season has been another record breaking year for numbers of snakes sighted, with the dry weather many more snakes seem to be coming in to areas where they are not normally seen, then with the very heavy rain in some districts have experienced, all indications they are breeding there in record numbers and are likely to many more unfortunate encounters with them before winter sets in. With brown snakes becoming much more of a problem over the past year in most parts of their range whether this is due to the changing climate or drought it is hard to say for certain but there has been a huge increase in the number of bites to pets especially dogs over the past months, and also a lot more people appear to have suffered bites from brown snakes than normal in places where they are not normally common. Then with all the young around in these areas they are going to be much more of a problem next year, you need to clean up any rubbish from around your homes and close off any potential hiding places where they will spend the winter. Victoria in particular is having many more problems with tiger snakes than in recent years.

We have not yet tested on all Australian species, as there are over 140 different types. But we are confident it will work well with all species as we have not yet found a type of snake that it does not work with.

Eastern Brown Snakes are probably the snake which causes the most problems in Eastern Australia, as brown snakes tend to live where the people live, and are very common right across the eastern states, even in towns and cities, being very poisonous and aggressive. Brown Snakes are best well alone if encountered. They account for most of the serious snakebites in Australia. They come in many shades of brown. Across Australia there are many local varities and names of Brown snakes, Dugites , Gwardirs, Western Brown Snakes , they are all extremely dangerous and should never be interfered with.

Extremely Dangerous

Tiger Snakes are also serious problem and very common in many districts, from southern Queensland right down around the southern states. Tiger snakes come in many different colour variations, but all are very poisonous, aggressive and potentially deadly.Tiger snakes are most often found in wetter locations such as along creeks, close to dams and wet gullies. Tiger snakes can grow to over two metres, Tiger snakes used to be the main cause of snakebites in Australia, but now it is the Eastern Brown Snake, as the main food of Tiger snakes is frogs, wheras Brown Snakes main prey is mice and there has been an explosion in the mice population in the most inhabited areas, while frogs appear to be on the decline. Western Australia has its own subspecies of Tiger Snake which is equally dangerous and locally very common in many of the SW parts of the state.

Extremely Dangerous

Dugites. Very common in the most populated parts of Western Australia, they thrive around human habitation, playing fields, meadows and backyards can have large numbers of this very dangerous snake. It is abundant in many Perth suburbs. So the risk of conflict is obvious. If you encounter a large dugite it is most likely to be a female as they are known to eat the males after mating. You should then be on the lookout for young snakes as the female will often stay around and look for the young until they can fend for themselves.

Extremely Dangerous

Red Bellied Black Snakes are also a common snake in many parts although where the cane toad has spread they are becoming less so, as they are mostly frog eaters, and eating cane toads appears to have considerably reduced their numbers. Red Bellied Black snakes are generally a more passive snake but they can be very dangerous at different times of the year, but as they carry an extremely toxic venom it is best never to interfere with them and give them a wide berth. This also applies to the Spotted Black Snake or Blue Bellied Black snake which is a close relative, more often found along the eastern ranges. MANY DOGS ARE BITTEN BY THESE SNAKES EACH YEAR. Perhaps it is beacause they are generally a more passive snake which many dogs will innocently go and" have a sniff" at and end up getting bitten, often with fatal results. These snakes can grow to a very large size.

Rough Scaled Snakes are a less well known species but very common in many eastern districts and are the cause of many bites to dogs and livestock, they carry a very poisonous potentially deadly venom, and are easily aroused often biting before they are even seen, they are often mistaken for other species especially Tiger Snakes, although smaller slimmer snakes, they often have similar markings in shades from dark brown to light tan.

Copperhead Snakes are another common species in the southern states, at different times of the year they can be quite aggressive, again they are poisonous. Both the Southern Copperhead and the Alpine Copperehead species can be very dangerous. Often found in damp situations around gullies and dams. Very numerous in many mountain valleys.

Death Adders are again locally very common snakes in many districts, but they are one snake that is very often unnoticed due to their habit of lying motionless in the leaf litter, waiting for prey to come to them, as they “fish' by wriggling the worm-like end of their tails. Colour can vary from chestnut red through to dark grey depending on their locality. Bites can easily occur if you step too close to one.

When the repeller unit is placed in your garden it is unobtrusive and blends in well. It is best to place the units where you feel you need the protection most such as near the children's play area in the picture below.

All that is visible of the unit is the sturdy green plastic top and the high quality solar panel. Beneath this is an aluminium probe, which is placed into the earth to transmit the warning pulses through the ground. Normally the only maintenance required to keep this unique repeller in perfect working order for years of trouble free service is the occasional wipe of the solar panel with a soft cloth to remove excess dust and grime. The Sentinel repeller will work perfectly well even in partial shade so it can be placed in a convenient location out of the main traffic areas, to avoid damage when cutting the grass etc. Most true snake experts will agree that nearly all snakes will flee if given the opportunity to do so, by placing these units around your home any snakes that enter the area will feel under threat and retreat. Usually they will go at least several hundred yards away, and they will not normally return.

If you have snakes coming from rivers, creeks, dams, lakes, swamps, woodlands or disused lots onto your land this is a great method of stopping them, before they can cause distress to your loved ones, simply place the repellers along your boundaries where you feel the snakes are coming from. Although no product is 100% foolproof, and we do not claim ours to be, as there is always the chance of some unforseen event / circumstance occurring. We do believe that under normal circumstances that by using Sentinel Repellers you will seriously reduce the chance of any unfortunate encounters with snakes.

With many snakes they only really become a problem when they come around our homes, where they can pose a threat to our loved ones, especially children and pets. Check in and around children's play houses and their favourite play spots in the garden. The primary prey of many snakes is rodents and frogs, try to clean up areas where these may breed, keep food scraps out of compost heaps, clean up uneaten stock food, fix dripping taps and generally make your home an unattractive place for rodents to breed, if you are plagued by frogs attracted to the insects throughout the summer, catch some of them and relocating them several kilometres away, as snakes will come to your home in search of them. Clean up the area around your home removing any trash such as old roofing iron etc - a favourite snake hiding place.
